Aircraft condensation trails (contrails) are formed by water vapor in jet exhaust freezing at altitude. A 2016 survey of 77 atmospheric science experts found 76 had encountered no evidence of secret spraying. The EPA, Air Force, and academic scientists have documented contrail formation chemistry in peer-reviewed literature.
What we know
Contrails (condensation trails) form when hot, humid air from jet exhaust mixes with cold, low-pressure air at altitude (typically above 26,000 feet), causing water vapor to condense and freeze into ice crystals. Contrail persistence and spread depends on atmospheric humidity - in dry air they dissipate quickly; in humid air they can persist for hours and spread into cirrus-like clouds. This behavior is well-documented in atmospheric physics and meteorology.
In 2016, Science magazine reported that a survey of 77 atmospheric science and geochemistry experts found 76 of them (98.7%) said they had found no evidence of secret atmospheric spraying programs. The one researcher who expressed some uncertainty did not endorse the conspiracy theory. This survey represents the only systematic poll of relevant scientific experts on the chemtrail claim.
The EPA published a 14-page fact sheet on contrails in response to public concerns, explaining the chemistry of aviation exhaust and contrail formation without any reference to deliberate chemical spraying. The Harvard Salata Institute published an analysis in 2025 addressing why the chemtrail narrative persists despite absence of evidence. Even Edward Snowden, who revealed classified NSA surveillance programs, has publicly stated that chemtrails 'are not a thing.' No whistleblower from any of the aviation, fuel, or military systems that would need to be involved has produced credible documentation of a spraying program.
