Claims that NASA hides evidence of a flat Earth are contradicted by an enormous body of independently verifiable evidence, much of it not produced by NASA at all. Flat Earth claims allege that NASA and allied governments fabricate photographs, videos, and mission data to conceal the Earth's true flat shape, often citing suspicion of specific NASA images or footage as staged. This claim faces a fundamental problem beyond any single agency's credibility: Earth's spherical shape is independently confirmed by multiple national space agencies with no shared incentive to collude, including the European Space Agency, Russia's Roscosmos, China's CNSA, India's ISRO, and Japan's JAXA, each of which has launched satellites and, in several cases, crewed missions that observe and photograph Earth from orbit.
Commercial and scientific evidence entirely independent of any space agency also confirms a spherical Earth. Commercial airlines calculate long-haul flight paths using great-circle navigation, routes that only make sense, and only match observed flight times and fuel usage, on a curved surface; a flat-Earth model would require dramatically different, and empirically falsified, flight paths and durations for routes such as Santiago to Auckland or Johannesburg to Perth. Long-distance circumnavigation, including solo sailing voyages and commercial polar flights, is routinely completed and independently timed and tracked, consistent with a globe and inconsistent with flat-Earth cartographic models, which cannot produce a coherent map that supports circumnavigation in all directions.
Basic physical observations reproducible by ordinary people without any space agency's involvement further confirm the Earth's curvature: ships and distant structures disappear bottom-first over the horizon, a direct consequence of a curved surface, observable with a simple telescope from a coastline; the changing angle and duration of the sun and stars at different latitudes, historically used by Eratosthenes around 240 BCE to calculate Earth's circumference using nothing more than shadow measurements at two different locations, arriving at a value close to the modern measurement; and the existence of time zones and the International Date Line, which only make coherent sense on a rotating sphere. Amateur high-altitude balloon flights, conducted by hobbyists, schools, and independent journalists using cameras costing a few hundred dollars, have repeatedly captured footage showing Earth's curvature from altitudes of 30 kilometers or more, entirely outside any government agency's control or budget.
The claim persists as part of a broader worldview in which official institutions are assumed to be lying by default, making any counter-evidence, however independently sourced, reinterpreted as part of the same alleged conspiracy. Because the spherical Earth model is confirmed by so many mutually independent lines of evidence, spanning ancient astronomy, modern private spaceflight companies, commercial aviation logistics, and inexpensive citizen science projects, it would require an implausibly vast, multi-century, cross-national conspiracy involving millions of people with no incentive to cooperate, a scenario with no supporting documentation of any kind. Private spaceflight companies with no government funding relationship to NASA, including SpaceX, have independently launched and operated satellites and crewed missions that have photographed Earth from orbit, providing commercially motivated, non-governmental confirmation of Earth's shape entirely outside any alleged NASA cover-up structure.
